The Nostromo was an M-class starcruiser valued at approximately $42 million (without payload) registered to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation out of the US state of Panama. The Nostromo was refitted as a commercial towing vehicle in 2116, and had largely been employed running automated ore and oil refineries between the Sol system and 20 Reticuli. Massing around 63,000 metric tons, the Nostromo's spaceframe is based on a modified Lockmart CM-88B Bison transporter. The Nostromo is a sturdy ship capable atmospheric re-entry.

For planetary landings, the ship has three main landing shocks. Micrometeorite and particulate shielding is sufficient to withstand the roughest re-entries. In-flight systems are controlled by the central "Mother" processor. The power core is a Laretel WF-15 fusion reactor. The ship may be self destructed by overriding the reactor cooling system and bleeding off coolant. This causes the fusion reactors to go supercritical, giving the crew 10 minutes to abandon ship before the reactor explodes. The first five minutes of this can be used to deactivate the self destruct, but after five minutes, the destruct sequence cannot be overridden.

The lifesystem comprises three decks, comprising some 1.1 million cubic meters of pressurized volume. The Nostromo has a crew of seven: Ship's Master (Captain), First Officer, Executive Officer, Navigation Officer, Science Officer, Chief Engineer, and Engineer's Mate. The Nostromo was destroyed by Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley, after all other crew members had been killed, when she self-destructed the ship and escaped in the Narcissus lifepod.
